Localisation and Cannulation of the central veins

Now it is recommended via independent studies (NICE) that the use of ultrasound in the operating theatre and on Intensive Care Units significantly reduces complications associated with central venous cannulation. Ultrasound enables prior to an attempt at central venous cannulation to determine if a vein is present, patent and well filled. On-screen the needle can be seen in the vein.

Interventional Procedural Summary:

  • Locate vein in cross section
  • Rotate longitudinally
  • Compress to test for vein and not artery
  • Insert needle - visible on-screen
  • When needle is in lumen insert guide wire
