Esaote Pie
Medical
is based in the south of the Netherlands in the city of Maastricht. It was founded in 1976, after the graduation of two electronic engineers who decided to establish their own company, looking for something interesting do with their new qualifications.
The name Pie is a acronym for something long since forgotten! First company projects were involved in the design and production of electronic circuits for other companies. The early years were the foundation of Pie Medical's know-how, during which time developments included a digital scan converter which is integral to making an ultrasound scanner. It naturally followed that the company should make not just components but the whole system and so came the Scanner 700, the first in the successful Pie Medical product line.
From the late seventies emphasis moved to concentrate on own brand development and production with the bonus of some important OEM contracts. The success of the company, and its by now 12 employees, meant that the town house acting as the office and design centre was too small! Close by another property was the production centre. With the number of employees doubling or even tripling every two years expansion required a new facility. In 1982 Pie Medical purchased a disused TV vacuum tube factory of 400mē. This property is still the head office and was further expanded in 1996 with a new production facility.
In 1998 Pie Medical became a member of the Esaote Group, Europe's largest ultrasound manufacturer.
